Copenhagen’s Kongens Nytorv: History and Design

In 1670, Christian V, who became the ruler of Denmark that year, created Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen. This public space was inspired by Paris’ Place Vendôme and replaced Gammeltorv, an old cobblestone medieval plaza. The new square was designed with asphalt and greenery, transforming it into a modern and aesthetically pleasing area.

Fun activities in Kongens Nytorv

Every summer, the region of Copenhagen’s newly hatched students gather and dance around an equestrian statue. The custom dates back more than a century. During the German occupation, it was prohibited.

Every winter, Kongens Nytorv is converted into a big ice rink where Copenhagen residents and visitors can go for free (although it costs money to rent skates) to go ice skating around Krinsen.

Buildings at Kongens Nytorv

The Royal Theater – Between the present theatre and the present Magasin, the Royal Theater was constructed between 1872 and 1874 to replace the earlier theatre. The lovely bronze rococo chairs flanked by statues of Ludvig Holberg and Adam Oehlenschlaeger were defaced in July 2019 by hapless restoration architects who clearly have cleanliness and hygiene on the brain and believe that copper is “dirt,” so they removed this, leaving the sculptures looking indistinct and uniformly dark brown all over. The Bissen and Th. Stein’s sculptures have a concealer that stops the creation of the lovely. They will so coincide with the Pegasus group on the Gamle Stage’s roof.

Charlottenborg (formerly Gyldenløve’s Palace, built 1672-1683). The oldest and finest building of Kongens Nytorv still displays graffiti in white paint on its right wing, misspelt with rearrangement of the last consonants, which reads “HO CHI MIHN”. It dates back to 1968.

Thotts Palae – Built-in 1683 as Juels Pal and owned by him until 1697, Thotts Palae (1760–1930) currently houses the French Embassy.

The D’Angleterre Hotel, which was built in 1874, is a multi-story structure that was built higher and higher exclusively towards the square until 1812. Try to look at the facade from the side; it serves as a backdrop.
